The Government of India launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna on 29th February 2024 with the aim of increasing rooftop solar capacity and empowering residential households to generate their own electricity.

Role of DISCOMs (SIAs)

Under the scheme, DISCOMs will play a crucial role in enabling and promoting rooftop solar by:

- Ensuring availability of net meters
- Facilitating timely inspection and commissioning of solar installations
- Managing vendor registration and performance
- Supporting interdepartmental coordination for solarizing government buildings

How the Scheme Works

The scheme provides financial assistance (subsidy) for rooftop solar installations:

System Capacity Subsidy Percentage Approx. Subsidy Amount
Up to 2 kW 60% of cost ₹30,000 per kW (up to ₹60,000)
2–3 kW 40% of additional cost ₹78,000 total for 3 kW

Subsidy cap: Maximum subsidy available is for systems up to 3 kW capacity.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government provides a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system in Delhi. The Delhi government also offers a supplementary subsidy of ₹30,000 for a 3 kW system, which, when combined, provides a total subsidy of ₹1,08,000 for a 3 kW installation. The subsidy is disbursed in stages, with a maximum of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW.
